Founded in Detroit in 1900, the Grabowsky Motor Company was the original GMC. It was owned by the brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky, who were focused on meeting the growing need for commercial trucks. They built a number of prototypes, and renamed and reorganized their business over the years, and it was eventually purchased by General Motors. GM went on to use the GMC division as its primary truck brand, proving its mettle with a well-publicized cross-country trip in 1916 and extensive service in World War I. During World War II, GMC produced some 600,000 trucks for the U.S. armed forces.
It wasn’t until the early 1970s that GMC began really appealing to retail customers, complete with its own version of the Chevy El Camino that was called the GMC Caballero. The 1990s saw the brand get a firmer grip on the retail marketplace with the launch of the award-winning GMC Envoy SUV, and the 2000s brought its first unibody SUV, the GMC Acadia.
